February is such a powerful month in the classroom. It is Black History Month! Thanks to Carter G. Woodson and other prominent African-Americans, we shine the spotlight on the achievements of Black Americans. Many like to teach about slavery and the kidnapping of Africans who endured centuries of enslavement. That history definitely needs to be taught. However, focusing on only the hardships African Americans endured does not show the amazing perseverance of Black Americans. It is a great time to show how African Americans overcame so much to shape the United States. Thus, when selecting picture books for Black History Month this year, focus on the ones that show triumph over trauma. I’m sure you will want to keep them in your library all year round!
Picture Book Selections
There are so many picture books for Black History Month! However, the three below are excellent to add to your picture book rotation. Whether homeschooling or in the classroom, they are beautiful ways to show students how people did not let obstacles stand in their way.
Young Gifted and Black: Meet 52 Black Heroes from Past and Present
This picture book is the perfect introduction to teaching students to be strong and courageous. The 52 icons will show students the importance of focusing on being a changemaker. These icons could have given up when life got tough. However, they did not do this. Instead, they provided encouragement, inspiration, and empowerment to others. Ultimately, this book explains achievements that will inspire students to chase their dreams and believe in themselves.
The Oldest Student: How Mary Walker Learned to Read
Mary Walker’s life began with trauma after being born into slavery. However, she did not let that stop her from achieving greatness. After being freed at the age of 15, she married and had a child. To help her church, she even worked many jobs, such as babysitting and selling sandwiches. Even with these accomplishments, she was missing out on one crucial aspect. She never learned how to read. Thus, at age 116, she worked hard to achieve this goal! Mary Walker shows students how life can be challenging, but it is essential to stay strong and achieve your goals!
Sing a Song: How Lift Every Voice and Sing Inspired Generations
African Americans persisted and resisted racism and systemic oppression for years. Despite all they went through, people never gave up. Instead, generations honor the past by working hard. Thus, a principal at an all-black school wrote Life Every Voice and Sing for students to honor Abraham Lincoln. This powerful song was passed down from generation to generation to provide inspiration and solace. This Black National Anthem ensures families have hope, strength, and inspiration.
Ways to Bring in Picture Books
Every teacher is on a limited budget. Additionally, schools only have so much money to update materials each year. Thankfully, books don’t have to cost anything! If you can’t purchase the titles, reserve them from your local library. Additionally, the school librarian may be able to help as well. New picture books can be added throughout the year by utilizing these ways!

Inspirational Poster FREEBIE
Students may know a few names of inspirational African American leaders. However, there are so many incredible people to learn about. Thus, the Inspirational Poster FREEBIE provides an overview of strong leaders. Each poster shows who the person is and positive aspects to show how courage and bravery are essential characteristics. The posters show the diligent work of so many who fought for justice and equality.
The above picture books for Black History Month are excellent ways to expand knowledge on strong African American leaders. Students will love seeing how despite so much racism and oppression, people did not give up. Instead, they worked hard to make positive changes for future generations.
