Honestly, people do not realize how lucky we are to live on such a beautiful planet. Sadly, this often results in treating it in poor ways. This includes dumping harmful chemicals into the ocean and littering. Thus, as Earth Day approaches, now is the perfect time to show students how they can make a positive change on the planet. Truly, caring for the planet begins with one small step at a time. Luckily, the Harlem Grown Picture Book Unit provides an example of what students can do to care for the world.
Harlem Grown: How One Big Idea Transformed a Neighborhood
Author Tony Hillery and illustrator Jessie Hartland wrote an inspiring true story that shows the power each person holds.
Most people just saw an abandoned lot as an eyesore in the neighborhood. However, one man saw the vast potential within the ground. Therefore, Tony Hillery invited students to turn the lot into a farm to grow healthy food options. Ultimately, students learned about health, sustainable eating, and working with others for a common goal.
Fast forward five years and the farm has its own Harlem Grown staff! It grows thousands of pounds of fruits and vegetables every year. All crops help feed kids and their families nutritious meals to support healthy lifestyles.

Benefits of Children Gardening

Gardening is such an excellent activity for children to start! Honestly, it is one activity that accommodates many different interests. First, it allows children to understand what healthy food is and how it grows. This includes preparing the soil, watering fruits and vegetables, and harvesting crops. Second, gardening can produce many crops, so it teaches about sharing goods and supporting others. Third, students learn about the science of food and how to design gardens to support strong growth. Since every crop is different, students will explore what each seed needs to grow, such as the amount of sun and water. Fourth, gardening teaches teamwork and cooperation. It takes a lot of time, patience, and attentiveness to grow fruits and vegetables. Many times, it requires family and friends to work together, so students learn the value of teamwork.
Activities for Children on Earth Day

To show the importance of Earth Day, offer students a few ways for them to care for our home. Luckily, there are so many options to pick from!
- Harlem Grown Picture Book Unit: After reading Harlem Grown, there are many ways to bring the reading alive! This unit includes activities for comprehension, character education, and grammar. Additionally, it includes the life cycle of a sunflower and writing prompts. This print-and-go resource includes showing students the power of hard work and determination.

- Go on a Nature Walk: One of the best ways to celebrate Earth Day is to get outside and explore the beauty of nature. Whether walking around the school property or a local park, students will love taking in the fresh air.
- Plant a Seed: Students may be worried about growing their garden. Therefore, start with something small. Allow each student to plant a small plant in a cup to nurture in the classroom. After they understand what to do, allow them to take it home. They will love showing their family what they have grown.
- Power of Recycling: Students may not know about recycling. Therefore, show them how to recycle. They may love this so much and ask their parents to start recycling at home.
