Nonfiction with a focus on Muslims challenges the distorted perceptions often spread by popular culture and the media.

 

 

These titles can offer non-Muslim pupils their initial encounter with positive portrayals of Islam. Meanwhile, Muslim students can benefit from seeing their faith and communities reflected positively.

 

 

 

It’s a common misconception that Muslims and Arabs are synonymous, but the truth is, that most Muslims are not Arab and reside outside the Middle East.

 

 

Consider gender stereotypes when selecting biographies. Books should show Muslim women making meaningful choices in joyful ways. Look for books that show males as “deep and complex individuals and caring parents and partners.”

 

It’s vital to ensure that nonfiction books introduced to children showcase Muslim Americans as AMERICANS, celebrating their sense of belonging and valuable contributions to our country…
