Police brutality has been a long-standing issue in the United States, particularly in the African American community. In recent years, the number of cases of police violence against black men has increased, leading to a heightened awareness of the issue.

The impact of police violence on black communities is far-reaching. It has led to a sense of fear and mistrust of law enforcement officers. This has had a negative impact on the mental health of young children, who are often exposed to injustice in their communities.

Derrick Washington, the author of “Son, You Matter”, did an excellent job addressing this issue in his picture book.
In the story, the character Ahmad is a young child with a special connection to his dad and a passion for chocolate chip cookie dough ice cream. An ordinary day turns into an extraordinary one that changes how Ahmad sees his dad and what he will eventually go through.
“Son, You Matter” is a book that is a must-read for anyone, not just young boys. The story will help to build empathy in readers who do not share the same fear that young black boys experience when encountering law enforcement.
The story can educate children about the issue and give them a starting point for connections and understanding. I love beginning hard conversations with a picture book because it relieves some of the pressure and helps to make the subject matter less intimidating.
The story is written in a lyrical style that is easy to follow. I would have preferred a different font for younger independent readers, but it doesn’t detract from the book’s message. India Sheana created illustrations that are appealing with a fluidity to them that shows emotions without facial details. I like how the faces are absent of any features. It makes it feel like you can put yourself in the picture and experience what the characters are going through.

A story full of emotion and heart, Ahmad’s day will leave you feeling different emotions, one of which is love.

“Son, You Matter” is perfect to add to your library. Create a safe space for children to discuss their experiences and feelings by reading “Son, You Matter” at home or school.
