Do you remember a situation when the quality time was spent on an assignment only to receive a “Good Job” back? When this happened, you felt discouraged, sad, and hurt. Unfortunately, this is the same way that students feel when receiving very general comments on assignments. Therefore, the unit on How to Write Quality Comments is the ideal way to help students expand on positive feedback.
Why do students need to give proper feedback?
No matter the age, the majority of students love to work together. However, as with anything, they need to learn how to do this. Unfortunately, when leaving feedback, students may not know how to politely do this in a way that fosters meaningful interactions. While they do not mean to be rude or negative, their feedback may be received that way. Thus, students have to learn how to give feedback in polite, respectful, constructive ways. If they do not learn this skill, they may hurt their relationships with others.
Students are going to be in a variety of positions where they need to leave comments. For example, they may work with peers and be assigned to help each other out. This may happen on a project, respond to literature, or during an essay. Additionally, students may leave a comment on something on social media. They may want to reply to someone in a respectful way or provide feedback about a business. Hence, learning how to write quality comments is such a valuable skill to learn. This unit will show students what a quality comment looks like and how to create one through a few simple steps.
In this thought-provoking resource, students will learn the art of writing comments. To do this, they will learn important concepts, such as reflecting then responding, and why it is important to use correct grammar.

Activities
Whenever a new skill is learned, it takes practice before implementation. Hence, there are many different activities in this resource. For example, there is a comment sort where students will identify good comments from ones that need improvement. In elaboration, there is then an activity where students practice writing comments following the acronym NEWS. By utilizing this method, students will have an easier way to recall the four needed parts of a quality comment.
As a continuation, students will then be given comments and identify which part of the NEWS process is missing. By doing this, students will be able to practice identifying each part of a quality comment. Lastly, students will be given a picture or prompt and then write a quality comment. Classmates can even check each other’s work after this. By completing these activities, students will be ready to provide quality comments no matter their location. Whether it is in the classroom or on social media, students will know what it takes to develop a meaningful response.

Anchor Charts
In order to provide helpful suggestions to students, there are anchor charts ready to be printed. Specifically, there are charts on what a quality comment should include, such as staying on topic and being positive.

Checklists
Since writing positive comments involves many aspects, there is even a checklist provided for students. By using this, students will be able to highlight specific aspects to look for. For instance, to ensure they used correct punctuation marks, they can highlight the ones they used in pink. Hence, the checklist is a great way to help students ensure they are writing quality comments.
Making quality comments is so important for students to learn! On one hand, they will greatly value receiving positive, meaningful feedback. On the other hand, they will value becoming more confident while writing their own comments. Overall, learning how to write feedback not only provides academic help but greatly strengthens relationships.
