Diwali, also known as the “festival of lights,” is an important five-day Hindu festival that celebrates the triumph of good over evil and light over darkness. The festival, which typically falls in late October or early November, is celebrated by Hindus, Sikhs, and Jains across the globe. Diwali preparations begin weeks in advance and include cleaning and decorating homes and workplaces, preparing sweets and snacks, and shopping for new clothes. On the festival’s final day, revelers dress in their finest clothes, light candles and lamps inside and outside their homes, set off fireworks, and exchange gifts and sweets.
