In a society filled with so many changes, teaching acceptance is key. Regardless of age, students are going to be surrounded by so many people. Additionally, there will be people from different backgrounds with different beliefs. Hence, Mommy’s Khimar Picture Book Unit is all about showing students how beauty exists in so many different ways.

Mommy’s Khimar Picture Book 

 

This incredible book will show students how everyone has items that help them feel loved. For this young Muslim American girl, it is her mom’s khimar. She loves to wrap herself up in her mom’s colorful headscarves. By doing this, readers see how beauty comes in so many forms. Scarfes are all different colors with different details and designs. Regardless of the one she wears, this young Muslim American girl always feels loved. Additionally, this story shows how important it is to value and welcome diversity.

Mommy’s Khimar Picture Book Unit

In order to teach acceptance, this unit is filled with thought-provoking activities. Additionally, there are many different connections to Reading, ELA/Writing, and Speaking/Listening standards. Furthermore, there are many opportunities for character education lessons in order to help teach students the importance of acceptance.

Reading

In addition to Mommy’s Khimar, there is a nonfiction reader about Ibtihaj Muhammad. Her story is truly inspirational and will show students how nothing should stand in the way of achieving goals.

Making Inferences

There are so many ways to practice inferences with this book! Therefore, there are different making inferences activities for practice. Students will be able to dig deeper into the book while making connections to their own lives.

Higher Order Thinking Questions

It is always important to push students to think a little deeper. Hence, there are higher-order thinking questions provided. Additionally, answer keys are included. These are great ways to push students beyond simple comprehension. With these questions, students will be analyzing pictures to help guide feelings and emotions.

Identifying Character Traits

It is so important to study character traits in order to really understand the story. Hence, there are creative assignments ready to go. For example, students can analyze the young Muslim American girl. To do this, they will look at her appearance in pictures and her actions. Students will really get to know the character by doing this! Then, students will be able to write about a personal connection to the story. By doing this, students will see how people can look different from each other but actually have similar interests.

 

Possessive Nouns

Grammar is always involved with reading and writing! Therefore, students will practice possessive nouns with this story. To do this, they will learn the difference between possessive and plural nouns. Students will become more confident with apostrophe placement after this activity!

Mommy’s Khimar is a great story to use when teaching acceptance. Additionally, it is perfect for a social and emotional (SEL) unit as well. The story and activities will help students learn how to show empathy for others and make positive relationships. By combining acceptance and SEL, students are going to know how to be kind, positive, and welcoming classmates!
