When students are reading, they are often focusing on being able to explain key details of the story. For instance, this can involve knowing the setting, characters, and type of conflict occurring. Additionally, there is always a focus on comprehension and using context clues for unknown vocabulary. However, it is just as important to focus on knowing the author’s purpose for writing the passage! Luckily, the Author’s Purpose Posters will be so helpful for students as they practice this tough skill.
What is Author’s Purpose?
Author’s purpose is the reason for writing the story or passage. It is truly so important to know the purpose in order to really understand the point of the story. For example, if the story begins with “Once Upon A Time…,” students know they will read some type of fairy tale. However, if it begins with “Venomous snakes are one of the most dangerous animals,” the purpose is different. Now, the purpose is to inform readers why this animal is so dangerous. Ultimately, knowing the author’s purpose will greatly help students understand the point of the passage.
In order to remember the different options for the author’s purpose, having a visual aid will be incredibly helpful. There are 5 posters for the author’s purpose including Persuade, Inform, Entertain, Explain, and Describe.

These are detailed, powerful posters that include examples to help students. Specifically, each poster includes the meaning behind each purpose. This is so important because students may have a hard time understanding the difference between the options. For instance, it can be tricky to know the difference between persuade and inform. Additionally, each poster includes examples of common places to find each type of author’s purpose. This will help students know that when they are reading a recipe, the purpose is often to explain. Or, when they are watching a commercial, the point is often to persuade. This is a great tie-in to knowing the author’s purpose is not only in writings!
Explain and Describe
The Author’s Purpose Posters do not just focus on providing students with a visual aid. This product’s purpose is to truly help students identify the author’s purpose. Therefore, a graphic organizer is included where students can record the title, author’s purpose, and evidence of the purpose. When teaching the author’s purpose, it is so important for students to explain and describe the reason behind their response. Therefore, they will practice explaining the meaning behind each purpose, which will help encourage deeper thinking! Now, if students are struggling, you will be able to see the confusion in the explanation!

Author’s purpose is so important for students to learn. Knowing the purpose truly helps students understand the point of the passage. With the posters and graphic organizer, students will gain a much deeper knowledge of how to tell the intended purpose of the reading. Now, students will know when they are being informed, when the passage is funny, or when they are being persuaded.
