When asking about female characteristics, many people will say pink, ballet, and glitter. When asking about male characteristics, many people will say blue, football, and trucks. However, these characteristics all represent gender stereotypes. Unfortunately, many students get stuck in having to do certain things simply because of their gender. Hence, teaching gender stereotypes in elementary school is more important than ever. In a society filled with so much hatred and judgments, it is more important than ever to encourage students to be truly happy. In order to do this, the Sparkle Boy Picture Book Unit truly shows students how gender does not dictate their interests.

In this picture book, Casey has so many interests! He loves to play with blocks and trucks but also loves glitter. Additionally, he wants to be like his family, which means wearing a shimmery skirt, having glittery nails, and wearing sparkly bracelets. While the adults in Casey’s life support his interests, his sister is not so sure if a boy should be wearing so much sparkle and glitter. Unfortunately, other boys begin to tease Casey for acting like a “girl” after seeing his skirt and nails. Thankfully, this shows his sister that Casey should not be limited to his interests because of his gender. Together, Casey and his sister show how everyone should be accepted, respected, and have the freedom to show any gender expression.

Sparkle Boy Picture Book Unit-Teaching Gender Stereotypes

In order to break gender stereotypes, this unit is filled with activities that show students how important it is to be true to who you are.

Comprehension

In order to ensure students understand the importance of breaking gender stereotypes, there are so many comprehension activities. By doing these, teachers can be sure students understand the book and the importance of Casey being true to himself. There are so many activities to select from, including questions, drawings, and journals.

Vocabulary

Books allow students to greatly expand their vocabulary. Thus, this unit has a prepared list and several activities to learn the meanings. After learning the vocabulary, there is even an assessment with the words in a sentence. Students will then be able to explain if the word was correctly used.

Compare and Contrast

In order to help break gender stereotypes, students will be able to compare and contrast themself to a character in the book. By doing this, they will see how people who may appear very different from each other can actually have things in common. Hopefully, students will be able to see that friends come in all shapes, sizes, colors, and with different interests.

Analyzing Literature

In order to show students how gender stereotypes exist in multiple books, they will be able to analyze different stories. A list of suggestions is even included! Then, students will be able to analyze different gender stereotypes the book holds. Next, they will discuss how the story breaks any stereotypes. By doing this, students will see how they can overcome any tough situation or circumstance.

Journaling/Gender Stereotypes

In order for students to really process the importance of breaking stereotypes, there are multiple journal prompts included. For example, students will learn about empathy and acceptance. By taking time to reflect on their thoughts, students will learn more about themselves and how to be supportive community members.

Diverse picture books are an incredible way to help support changes in society. By starting at a young age, students will naturally know how important self-expression is. Additionally, they will see how there is never a need to judge others for being who they are. By teaching students to be open and supportive, everyone can live in a happier society filled with less worry!
