Students have an unbelievable amount of expectations on them. In addition to excelling in all core subject areas, students are expected to have some extraordinary talent. For some, this talent takes place in athletics. For others, this talent takes place in the fine arts, such as painting or playing an instrument. However, so many students, are confused about what to try. Thus, many schools have implemented a focus on STEAM/STEM engineering. This is due to the fact that STEAM/STEM encourages students to think outside of the box. Thankfully, the Engineering Design Process Logbook is here to ensure your students are using their creativity!

Ask: In the first stage, students think about questions they want to answer. Then, they think of problems they want to solve.

Imagine: Brainstorming is so important in STEAM/STEM engineering! Thus, students will explore ideas that may lead to an answer to their questions. Additionally, students may even think of an invention that can help with their problems.

Plan: It is vital to have a plan for any action! Thus, students will create an action plan for their invention. For instance, the guide will help them prepare what materials are needed and the steps to take.

Create: Now, it is time to put the plan into action! Students will work on bringing their plans to life and take notes as they go. The notes will be extremely helpful as plans take multiple revisions!

Redesign: Students will now improve their inventions. Here, they will write about changes they want to make and list new materials needed.

Improve: In order to be honest with themselves, students will evaluate their invention. For example, they will address what went wrong and what went right. By doing this, students will understand that inventions are always a work in progress!

While this unit is perfect to use after reading about Rosie Revere, it can be used for any STEM/STEAM project! The Engineering Design Process Logbook will ensure students know how to journal creations as they work to become inventors.
